Most people act according to some kind of moral code of their own, but few go to the extremes of bushido, the samurai code of ethics that guides their attitudes, behavior, and lifestyle. One of Richard Mille's friends and collaborators was two-time Formula 1 champion Fernando Alonso, an avid lover of traditional Japanese arts and samurai. It was during conversations with founder Richard Mille that Alonso's dedication and understanding of the Samurai philosophy inspired the watchmaker to envision a completely new project that would align with the world of haute horlogerie and craftsmanship. A team of craftsmen worked together and took nearly four years to achieve.


The new RM47 limited edition features golden samurai armor and swords that are painstakingly hand-carved and painted by husband-and-wife team Pierre-Alain and Valérie Lozeron. Each piece took 16 hours to carve, followed by nine hours of hand-painting. The armor is made of 3N gold and features the Asano clan, which many scholars believe symbolizes the true spirit of Bushido. Each clan has a heraldic symbol called the family crest. The Asano clan's heraldic symbol is two crossed falcon feathers, which represents strength and authority in war. This feature is found on the tourbillon at six o'clock and on the winglets of the warrior's helmet. The winding crown is decorated with another important Japanese symbol - the maple leaf, symbolizing the elegance, beauty and transience of life.
